Your Commonly Asked Questions on Amazon Redshift Answered

Q: What is Amazon Redshift?

Amazon Redshift is a fully managed data warehouse. Users are able to analyze data using standard SQL in a cost-effective manner compared to traditional databases. As well, integrate it with other BI tools, like Kloudio.

At its core, Amazon Redshift allows users to run complex analytic queries using query optimization. This means results can come back in a matter of seconds and is scalable for growing amounts of data.

Q: How does Amazon Redshift compare to competing databases for data warehousing and analytics?

In an in-depth analysis conducted last month comparing Redshift and BigQuery, we found Amazon Redshift has the upper hand in performance, cost and usability overall. This is particularly true when used on an enterprise scale. However, if simple accessibility and usage is important to you, BigQuery does have the simpler UX features.

Simple Presentation is where BigQuery reveals itself as the big winner by far. BigQuery abstracts your data so it appears simple and easy to use right away. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of doing away with important details.

Data Types are pretty comparable for both data warehouses, which both include text, integers, floats, booleans and more. Redshift does support additional data types that include financial data for instance. Where BigQuery falls short is with user defined precision which may result in inaccuracies.

Loading Time is more complex for Redshift users because a variety of formats like CSV, JSON, and AVRO compress and complicate the process.

Expansion potential are huge for both Redshift and BigQuery. BigQuery focuses on this with huge communities for support and implementation. That said, AWS is growing fast and Redshift is built on top of Postgres.

Q: How can I get Amazon Redshift data into Google Sheets and/or Excel to create reports?

There are a few reporting and data synchronization solutions for Amazon Redshift; each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Kloudio is the leading solution as the only Amazon Redshift reporting tool that generates reports within Excel and Google Sheets. These reports can be scheduled to run automatically every week, day, or even minute.

This means you can build custom reports using Redshift data without leaving your spreadsheet application. Our drag and drop report builder is extremely intuitive and very robust. We also have a SQL editor and KloudML friendly for non-SQL users.

Our users range from small businesses to Fortune 500 firms like Netflix and have reported huge increases in productivity since leveraging powerful data in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.

Q: Is Amazon Redshift secure?

Amazon Redshift encrypts and keeps user data secure in transit and at rest using industry-standard encryption techniques. To keep data secure in transit, Amazon Redshift supports SSL-enabled connections between any user applications and Redshift data warehouse clusters.

Likewise, Kloudio users also experience high levels of data security. Users connect to Kloudio's portal over HTTPS, the same protocol used in online banking. The back end servers communicate through SSL encrypted connections and query customer databases through whitelisted IP addresses and SSH tunnelling.

Q: Is there an Excel plugin to upload and download data from Amazon Redshift?

Kloudio connects Google Sheets or Excel to any database (Redshift, Postgre, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, etc) and allows you to access and update the database from your spreadsheet.

Using Report Builder or SQL editor for more advanced users, anyone can define reports on the Kloudio portal and run these reports to extract data onto Excel.

Using upload templates, anyone can update spreadsheet data from Excel or Google Sheets to their database without IT involvement or SQL knowledge.
